Jason Manford and Alex Jones’ debut as hosts of The One Show attracted its highest audience since the departure of Christine Bleakley in June.

The refreshed line-up delivered an average audience of 4.54m (23.6%) to BBC1 and 74,500 (0.39%) to BBC HD from 7pm to 7.30pm, according to overnight Barb figures supplied by Attentional.

It was the largest audience the show has assembled since 10 June episode’s 4.17m (22.05%) viewers, before Bleakley left for ITV’s new morning show Daybreak.

Despite the good performance, it was below The One Show’s average Monday night audience of 4.64m (21.92%) for the year so far, which includes Bleakley tenure with co-host Adrian Chiles’. Last Monday’s episode was watched by 4.02m (21.77%) viewers, when Gabby Logan and Matt Baker were at the helm.

Last night’s edition was above the equivalent episode’s audience of 3.3m (18.1%) on 16 August 2009, while the arrival of Manford and Jones proved more popular than Bleakley’s debut, which pulled in an audience of 3.4m (19.3%) on 16 August 2007.

ITV’s Emmerdale won the slot with an audience of 6.1m (31.8%) from 7pm to 7.30pm, while Dan Snow’s Norman Walks was watched by 1.12m (5.8%) over the same period.

The Channel 5 News informed 130,000 (0.7%) in the half-hour slot and Channel 4’s bulletin was watched by 700,000 (3.5%) from 7pm to 7.55pm. A further 431,000 (0.2%) tuned in on C4+1.

Later in the evening BBC2’s Dragons’ Den made toast of the competition, beating ITV’s Real Crime with Mark Austin.

The business show fired up an audience of 2.78m (11.5%) on BBC2 and 54,900 (0.23%) on BBC HD across the 9pm hour, while Austin’s look at UK criminal activity only drew 2.65m (10.9%) to ITV1 and 33,900 (0.14%) to ITV1 HD in the same slot.

Dragons’ Den also outwitted Channel 4 ob-doc The Hospital, which treated an audience of 1.4m (5.8%) at 9pm and an additional 166,400 (0.9%) on time-adjusted C4+1.

BBC1’s Who Do You Think You Are? won the slot with an audience of 5.18m (21.4%), while film Inferno delivered 1.31m (6%) to C5 from 9pm to 10.55pm.
