THURSDAY: The return of Have I Got News for You and Martin Clunes comedy Reggie Perrin generated a mixed response on BBC1.

The stalwart satirical quiz rode back into the schedule on the crest of a busy news week after the Chilean miner rescue and was watched by an average audience of 5.34m (21.6%) from 9pm to 9.30pm on BBC1, according to overnight Barb figures supplied by Attentional.

The strong audience was not carried through to the return of Reggie Perrin, which only entertained 3.21m (14.2%) viewers up to 10pm.

The launch of series two of the sitcom, starring Clunes as a thin-skinned middle manager, could not match last year’s debut audience of 5.37m (22.45%), when it was in a Friday night slot. It was also below BBC1’s slot average of 4.69m (19.96%) for the year to date.

Elsewhere, Law & Order: UK arrested 4.24m (18.2%) viewers for ITV1 across the 9pm hour, while an additional 161,600 (0.69%) watched the drama on ITV1 HD.

An Inside Nature’s Giants special informed a below average audience of 1.44m (6.4%) about the inner workings of a giant squid on Channel 4 at 9pm. A further 240,800 (1.5%) watched the dissection on C4+1.

BBC2’s Autumnwatch hunted down 2.16m (8.9%) viewers over the 8.30pm hour, while Autumnwatch Unsprung pulled in a further 2.03m (8.9%) up to 10pm.

Channel 5 showed war movie Tears of the Sun, recruiting an audience of 1.08m (5.6%) from 9pm to 11.20pm.
