THURSDAY: Monty Don returned to BBC2 with almost 2m viewers – well up on the first series opener of Big Dreams Small Spaces.

Lion Television’s six-part series comfortably outperformed the 1.4m (6.7%) who tuned in for the first series launch in a Monday 7pm slot in October 2014.

It was also in line with BBC2’s 1.9m (9.2%) slot average for the last 12 months, while almost half the audience (47%) was over the age of 65.

Elsewhere at 8pm, BBC1 drama Dickensian homed in on its finale with 2.3m (10.7%) with two episodes in the 20-parter remaining. It is failing to challenge the 3.3m (16.5%) slot average.

ITV dominated the 8pm slot with 6m (28%) tuning in for Emmerdale between 8pm and 8.30pm, followed by an audience of 4.4m (21%) for Birds of a Feather.

On Channel 4 Location, Location, Location continued with 2m (9.4%) across the hour from 8pm, while C5 wrapped up the slot with 1.2m (5.7%) watching Storm Force: Winter Road Rescue.

The Story of China (BBC2) 9pm-10pm

Maya Vision’s six-part documentary series continued with a performance below the 1.3m series average. It is also struggling to meet the 1.6m (7.6%) slot average, according to Barb data provided by overnights.tv.

BBC1 won the slot with Red Planet Pictures’ Death in Paradise, which continued with 6.2m (29%) against Jericho on ITV, which landed a stable 2.7m (12.7%). It remained well below ITV’s 3.2m (15.5%) slot average.

On C4, Love Productions’ immigration documentary Keeping up with the Khans slipped to a series low of 1m (4.9%), down on last week’s 1.1m (5.2%). It remained significantly behind the channel’s 1.5m (7.5%) slot average.

C5 rounded off the 9pm slot with 970,000 (4.6%) tuning in for Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons, dipping from last week’s 1.1m (5.2%) debut.
