The return of Match of The Day scored BBC1 a peak audience of nearly 4.5m viewers on Saturday night.
The football show kicked-off with highlights from the first day’s action of the 2010-11 Premier League season, entertaining an average audience of 3.95m (28%) from 10.30pm to 11.50pm.
The audience peaked at 11pm with 4.47m (30.68%) viewers, according to overnight Barb figures supplied by Attentional.
Although Match of The Day was above BBC1’s slot average, it was not strong enough to beat last year’s season opening audience of 4.16m (24.51%) viewers. However, it was above the 2008 audience of 3.65m (25.30%).
Elsewhere in the late evening slot, the first half of film Oceans Twelve entertained 1.65m (9.68%) from 9.50pm to 11.20pm on ITV1 and ITV1 HD. The ITV News then informed 950,000 (8%) for 15-minutes, before Oceans Twelve continued until 12.30am with 850,000 (9.9%) viewers.
Channel 4’s repeat of teen drama Misfits was watched by 550,000 (3.1%) from 10pm to 11.05pm, while an additional 540,300 (0.5%) tuned in on C4+1. Meanwhile, CSI: Miami pulled in 910,000 (6.3%) viewers from 10.40pm to 11.35pm.
On BBC2, 2006 romcom Sparkle conjured up an audience of 480,000 (4.4%) from 10.50pm to 12.30am.
