SUNDAY: The MTV EMA Awards 2014 hit a peak of 800,000 viewers on Channel 5 as Downton Abbey bowed out with its lowest overnight series average yet.

The event, broadcast live from Glasgow, was simulcast for the first time on Channel 5 and MTV as Viacom forges closer ties between the two channels. The MTV audience added a further 82,000 (0.4%) to the total.

On C5, the show, presented by Nicki Minaj, peaked in the five minutes from 10pm with 808,000 (3.6%).

It dwarfed the audience for last year’s show from Amsterdam, which entertained an average audience of 80,000 (0.4%), peaking with 136,000 (0.5%). The 2012 event, held in Frankfurt, performed to just 33,000 (0.1%). Both shows aired on MTV only.

8.3m (35.8%)

The fifth series of Carnival Films’ period drama bowed out with its lowest overnight series average to date.

Across its eight parts, the show entertained 8.1m (34.7%), below the previous low of 8.4m (31.7%) recorded for its first run in 2010.


The climax was the joint second-most watched episode of the series. The show got underway in September with a high of 8.4m (38%), according to overnight Barb data provided by Attentional.

The BBC1 format shed around 500,000 viewers from last week’s series high.

It remained well ahead of it ITV rival, which fell by around 400,000 from last week’s 7.8m (29.9%) to record the lowest Results performance of the series. 

Opposite at 8pm, BBC2 doc The Mekong River with Sue Perkins set off for its four-part journey with 2.4m (9.1%) as Channel 4’s Speed with Guy Martin slowed to a series low of 1.6m (6.3%), around 500,000 viewers fewer than last week’s outing.
