BBC Studios seeks head of new AI experimentation lab

BBC Studios is actively recruiting a head of its new AI Creative Lab, which will serve as a dedicated hub for experimentation and support its teams in applying rapidly expanding AI technologies to productions around the world. According to the job advertisement, the head of AI Creative Lab must have “deep technical literacy” in generative AI and machine learning as well as proven experience in production environments. The responsibilities of the role include defining the strategy of the lab, serving as the leading expert and advocate for AI in production, managing relationships with stakeholders and ensuring all output is ethical and editorially sound.

Netflix names European country for Physical 100

Netflix in Italy is remaking South Korean reality format Physical 100, it has confirmed. The streamer said earlier this month that a European version of the show was in the works and it has now confirmed that Physical 100: Italy will land on the streamer “soon”. Editorial curator is Roberta Briguglia, with Tommaso Marazza as project lead. The writing team includes Lorenzo Campagnari, Valerio Trapasso, Christian Monaco, Federica Riva, Antonio Moreno, and Barbara Strambi. The format, which was created by MBC producer Jang Ho-gi and debuted in 2023, sees elite athletes, bodybuilders, and military professionals face off in grueling quests that test raw strength and endurance. It is also being remade for Netflix in the US.

John Le Carré world moves into comics

John Le Carré’s literary world of espionage has moved into comic book form through a collaboration by Dark Horse Comics and The Night Manager indie The Ink Factory. Three-issue John le Carré: The Circus – Losing Control will capture the world created by the acclaimed author in his novels. Developed with The Ink Factory, the comic centres on spy agency The Circus. When Control, the agency’s all-powerful puppet master, vanishes, his assistant Maggie must act fast to stop The Circus from crumbling. The series is written by Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT, Spy Superb) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Ibrahim Moustafa (RetroActive, James Bond: Origin).

BBC orders podcast on notorious anti-paedophile campaigner

The BBC is readying a Sounds true-crime podcast Crime Next Door: The Ballad of Big Mags. The series will explore the life and times of Margaret ‘Big Mags’ Haney, the self-styled anti-paedophile campaigner from Stirling who sparked headlines for her work in the late 90s before it emerged that she was actually the head of a notorious criminal gang. To tell the story, journalist Myles Bonnar speaks to those closely connected to her and delves into BBC archives. The six-part series will be available on BBC Sounds from Friday 8 August.
