The North West Development Agency is pumping£2.8m into digital industries in the region to boost media skills.

The cash award follows a joint proposal from North West Vision and Media, the regional screen agency, and Skillset, the sector skills council for the creative media industries.

The funding will be used by the two organisations to deliver a two-year rolling programme of apprenticeships, mentoring sessions, specialist skills workshops and short courses. The programme will be aimed at employees and managers of small and medium-sized creative media businesses, professional freelancers and new entrants to the industry with fewer than two years' experience.

The scheme has also been established with the development of mediacity:uk in Salford in mind. “It should provide even more regular production and there will be huge demand for those with new and up-to-date skills,” said Skillset managing director of vision and media Lynne McCadden. “This funding and investment will help us make sure both individuals and businesses are equipped to take advantage of all these opportunities, fulfil this demand and continue to demonstrate how impressive the talent in the north-west industries is.”

North West Vision and Media will lead the delivery of the programme alongside Skillset North, an industry-led steering group including ITV, Lime Pictures, Key 103, Code ComputerLove, Sony Studios and the BBC.

Separately, Skillset is funding DV Talent, the training provider, to launch the Fast Track Series Producer Scheme, which aims to develop the next generation of senior production talent. The scheme will be taught by industry figures, including new Five director of programmes Ben Gale.
