The ITV Studios-produced series returned for a three-part run with an audience below the 3m (12.1%) who tuned in to the previous series opener – an interview with EastEnders star June Brown – in January.

It also failed to outperform ITV’s slot average of 3.6m (16.7%) for the past 12 months, according to overnight Barb data provided by Attentional.

Morgan narrowly beat competition from BBC2’s The Great British Bake Off: an Extra Slice which treated 2.5m (12.2%) but was unable to overtake BBC1 sitcom Boomers.

The pensioner comedy won the slot despite recording a series low, after shedding viewers each week since it launched. With two episodes remaining the Hat Trick comedy is averaging 3.5m (17.1%), over 1m down on the 4.7m (21.6%) slot average.

Opposite on Channel 4, Eight out of Ten Cats Does Countdown returned for a fourth series with 1.9m (9.3%) down on the 2.3m (10.7%) who tuned in to the previous series opener in June.

The latest eviction from Celebrity Big Brother could not prevent Channel 5 from becoming the last-placed terrestrial channel in the slot with 1.7m (8.6%).

Boomers was followed on BBC1 by David Walliam’s Big School which slipped to 2.6m (13.2%) after launching last week with 2.9m (14.2%).

Earlier in the evening the second instalment of Marston’s Brewery: One Ale of a Job dipped to 640,000 (3.2%) after opening up last week with 810,000 (4%).
