Karel Prince speaks about his rise to fame as The HMRC of Football, as well as giving advice to aspiring content creators

Karel Prince, or The HMRC of Football, as he otherwise known, believes creators should look beyond views when measuring their content.
Speaking in a session at the Broadcast Sport Content Summit at dock10 Studios last month, which is now available in the latest episode of the Broadcast Sport Podcast, Prince revealed the back story behind his rise to prominences, future plans for The HMRC of Football, and gave advice to up and coming people in the industry.

One key piece of advice was to try and ignore the ups and downs of views, and concentrate on creating the content that you want. Prince said, “I’ve never cared as much about the views. I think you get trapped into that. You start to go crazy because you’re like, ‘Oh, this is not performing. What do I need to do to start performing? Should I jump on this?’
“I just keep doing it, because at some point the algorithm can be doing what it’s doing and you’re not getting the views and likes you deserve and other times it can be really in your favour and pushing everything that you’re doing.”
As for his own beginnings, Prince revealed that it was a personal grudge that helped spur him to make the jump into content creation. He said, “Although I present neutrally, I was raised a Chelsea fan, and there was a podcast Jay Bothroyd went on and they were ranking Premier League strikers. He had like a lot of negative things to say about Didier Drogba, who was clearly a hero of mine growing up.
“So, I just remember seeing the clips of him talking about his own career, and I went, ‘this doesn’t smell right. Let me make a video about you and talk about you in the same way you were talking about Drogba.’ And people lapped it up.”
He added, “It was a vendetta.”
Prince also gave an insight into his process, and revealed that now The HMRC of Football is up and running he can produce videos at very short notice. He told the Content Summit crowd, “Now I’ve got a process that makes it a lot easier. I’ve got the databases that I go and look into that serve me quite well.
“I would say making a video depends on how I’m feeling in the moment, because you’ve got to bring that energy and comedic value to it.
“If I’m not feeling it in that moment I might just sit on it and let it stir, and then maybe I record it later that day or the next day. But if I feel I could just do it there and then, start to finish we could have research and the video [filmed] within half an hour.”
Going forward, it doesn’t appear that the HMRC brand will be stopping at football, with other sports stars possibly in Prince’s target list, “There’s a lot of scope for it in terms of my love for different sports, so I would do it.
“I think the intention at the moment is to focus on football and get our audience, because that’s my primary sport, and then branch out from there.
“It has crossed over into other spaces. I know there’s been rugby players that have spoken about it, cricket players that have spoken about it. For the most part, if there are football fans in other sports, there’s a lot of crossover and it would be received well. That’s all in due time.”
