Former Peep Show producer and Look Around You co-creator Robert Popper has joined the writing team of US animated comedy South Park.

Show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have asked Popper to work on the remaining four episodes of the current series after inviting him to spend a week brainstorming ideas with the team.

He will be based in LA and will work alongside resident writers Vernon Chatman and Erica Rivinoja, as well as Stone and Parker. The series airs in the US on Comedy Central.

The position, which Popper describes as “a dream come true”, comes as he finishes writing the forthcoming six-part Channel 4 comedy Friday Night Dinner, a co-production between his own indie Popper Pictures and Big Talk. Filming begins in the autumn.

Popper also recently contributed a series of sketches to the BBC Comedy website, based on his ‘time-waster’ character Robin Cooper.
