Comcast-owned broadcaster to hand majority of staff £1000

Sky is gifting around 20,000 of its UK and Irish workers £1000 each to help with the cost-of-living crisis.
The Comcast-owned pay-TV broadcaster is to make the £20m pay-out to 70% of its staff in two stages – with those eligible receiving £500 in October and a further £500 in January. Irish employees will receive the equivalent amount in Euros.
The measure is designed to tackle the rising cost-of-living, including energy bills, with the broadcaster also providing staff members with access to discounts on food, clothes and electricals.
Over the six months to the 30 June, Sky’s revenues dipped 9% to £8.1bn, with adjusted EBITDA increasing to £1.3bn.
Sky is among the 5% of businesses with 250 employees or more to offer workers a one-off payment, according to an Office for National Statistics’ Business Insights report.
At the same time, indies are being increasingly buffeted by clamours for pay rises, as the cost of production necessities such as accommodation and catering soar.
Last month, Shine TV managing director Jon Swain told Broadcast: “It’s a slow squeeze that feels like it could turn into a bear hug”.
