Costly reality show keeps head above water in the ratings but reliance on inherited audience is evident
Unofficial overnight figures brought mixed blessings for Survivor, ITV's high-profile reality-tv show writes Jon Rogers.

Last night's episode at 21.00 averaged 5.2 million (25.3 per cent share) which is up from last Thursday's audience of 4.4 million (22 per cent) but down on Friday's instalment which gained 6 million (29.4 per cent), with the help of the inherited audience from Coronation Street. It was also beaten by BBC 1's new two-part drama Scoreat 21.00 which hit the spot for 5.5 million (26.8 per cent) viewers.

These latest figures, which are still well short of the disappointing 6.6m the show pulled on its debut, demonstrate that without a healthy inherited audience from the slot preceding it Survivor is having trouble holding its own. The news will further fuel speculation that ITV is considering moving the programme to another slot, scheduling it after ratings bankers such as a new series of Millionaire?. ITV sources have thus far refused to be drawn on the broadcaster's plans for the show.

The early evening episode of Channel 4's Big Brotherat 20.30 did well for the channel overall, but was disappointing for the show with 2.8 million (13.1 per cent). Earlier, at 19.45 C4's coverage of the cricket only drew 800,000 (3.8 per cent). Channel 5's documentary at 20.00 Pearl Harbour: Seven Views of Defianceproved a success, attracting 1.9 million (8.9 per cent) while BBC 2's repeat of the first episode of To the Manor Bornat 20.00 averaged 1.3 million (6.1 per cent).

The late edition of Big Brotherat 22.00 proved to be more attractive, gaining 4.2 million (21.3 per cent) while the final part of the channel's controversial drama Men Onlyat 22.30 pulled in 2.7 million (24.2 per cent). BBC 2's sitcom Couplingat 22.00 managed only 1.7 million (8.6 per cent) and Newsnightat 22.30 informed 1.8 million (13.8 per cent).
