One of the companies making a big splash at IBC was Strada with its mission to ‘ditch the cloud’.

It provides shared, collaborative global access to files without the need for the cloud.

Strada enables this by utilising peer-to-peer tech to make it possible to access files on your local hard drives and computers instantly from a web browser on any desktop from anywhere in the world.

It demonstrated this at IBC, showing a 150 GB Pro Res file on a computer in LA being instantly accessed and played seamlessly on the Strada stand in Amsterdam, using only the less-than-reliable IBC wifi.

To use Strada, you connect any folder on your local drive to the free ‘Strada Agent’ software, which makes it immediately available to view instantly using a Strada login on any other computer.

You can transfer files between computers and download them onto any device of your choice too, using Strada’s peer-to-peer network.

Next month, Strada is rolling out the service on mobile phones too.

Before then, the service is launching its pricing model and making the platform open for anyone to use. The pricing should attract a healthy number of signups.

The free account allows up to three users to connect unlimited drives and remotely view and access unlimited files, and share and receive up to 15 GB / month.

The basic account costs $8 / month and improves on the free account by allowing up to 10 users to share and receive up to 250 GB / month.

Then there’s an unlimited account for $24 / month, offering unlimited users to share and receive unlimited files each month.

 Strada - key features:

  • All of your files stay where they already are, accessible from anywhere.
  • Skip cloud storage and tools by storing files on your local drives.
  • Keep your media safe on your own devices. Control what you share with whom and what is kept private.
  • Strada makes collaboration effortless and fast. Grant controlled access in seconds to large amounts of media.

Strada was created by brothers Michael and Peter Cioni. Michael was previously senior vp at Frame.io, while Peter was an executive at Netflix. Both also co-founded Panavision’s post-production creative services division, Light Iron.

Broadcast Tech spoke to Michael Cioni at IBC. He said: “Cloud is not the solution for many for collaborative working, due to the expense, internet speed required and because file sizes are huge. It’s 40x more expensive to store 1GB in the cloud compared to a local drive. So, we enable you to keep everything on-premise, on your hard drives and computers, and use peer-to-peer to give you access from anywhere in the world.

“There are no proxies and no transcoding involved. Files are delivered with 400ms latency, using the power of the computer at the source and H265 compression.”
