Tony Jordan’s Red Planet Pictures has named the winner of its third annual writing competition.
Simon Glass beat more than 1,500 others to win the Red Planet Prize, comprised of £5,000 cash, a script commission and agent represenation.
The competition, set up to nurture writers and find new talent, was awarded in partnership with Kudos Film and Television.
The winner was chosen by an expert panel of judges which included Kudos executive chairman Stephen Garrett; BBC head of drama, England indies, Polly Hill; and Channel 4 head of drama development Ben Stoll.
Glass’ script, In the Flesh, impressed the judges as a darkly comic tale about people taking control of their destinies and laughing in the face of adversity. He has already written for series drama, theatre and open opera.
“I feel deeply honoured, thrilled and incredibly grateful to have won the Red Planet Prize,” said Glass.
“If there’s one thing I’d like to say to other writers struggling to get their break, of which I count myself as one, it’s believe in yourself, write, write, write and keep the faith, it can move mountains.’’
Jordan said: “Finding the next generation of television writers is at the very heart of what Red Planet is trying to achieve as a company. This year’s entries to the Red Planet Prize show me that the talent is out there if you’re willing to look.”
