BBC2 sci-fi drama Torchwood is to make its radio debut this summer with a one-off special episode for BBC Radio 4.

The network has commissioned a 45-minute standalone episode of the Doctor Who spin-off for its Afternoon Play slot. The episode is timed to coincide with R4's news and documentary coverage of the launch of the world's largest particle accelerator at the Cern physics laboratory in Switzerland.

Joseph Lidster, who wrote a recent episode of the series as well as a series of independent audio plays and the bulk of the fictional content on the BBC's Doctor Who website, is penning the script, which will use the particle accelerator as a starting point.

Cast members including John Barrowman are signed up to reprise their roles for the play, which will also be available as a podcast and a CD after broadcast.

R4 drama commissioning editor Jeremy Howe ordered the play, which will be produced by BBC Wales radio producer Kate McAll in collaboration with the Torchwood production team.
