Tuesday’s Child has landed its first peak-time BBC1 show – a Saturday night music format inspired by the hit film Pitch Perfect.
The 6 x 60-minute show Pitch Battle (w/t), due to air this summer, will seek to uncover Britain’s best singing group and feature musical styles including pop, rock, folk and gospel and even fishermen’s choirs.
Groups will compete across a series of choral challenges in five hour-long heats, which includes a Pitch Perfect-inspired ‘riff offs’ round [pictured], a soloists challenge and an acapella round.
The knock-out contest will culminate with a live final.
The commission was awarded to Tuesday’s Child following a three-stage pitch process involving 12 indies.
Pitch Battle was commissioned by director of content Charlotte Moore and controller of entertainment commissioning Kate Phillips.
It will be exec produced by Tuesday’s Child chief executive Karen Smith and BBC commissioning editor Jo Wallace.
Phillips said the format reflected the UK’s love of singing “with shedloads of sass and spirit”.
Earlier this month, Phillips told Broadcast she was hunting for “funny, feelgood television”.
Smith said: “After a divisive, depressing 2016, we’re bringing some humour and harmony to 2017 in a contemporary new format with story, scale and spelling-binding, hairs-on-the-back-of-your neck performances.”
Greenbird-backed Tuesday’s Child also produces antiques quiz For What It’s Worth for BBC daytime and peak-time hypnotism format You’re Back In The Room [pictured] for ITV.
