Fledgling indie Current Sponge has hired the BBC executive producer behind Terry Pratchett: Choosing To Die and rebranded as Sundog Pictures.

Sam Anthony joins Sundog as creative director after three years as a BBC Knowledge commissioning executive producer, where he worked across all factual genres with additional responsibility for Scottish indies.

His exec producer credits include Welcome to Lagos and Terry Pratchett: Choosing To Die.

Prior to the BBC he worked at indies including Nutopia, ITV Productions, RDF Media, Shine Television and Renegade Pictures.

Sundog managing director Johnny Webb said: “All of our plans for the future revolve around telling serious stories in an accessible way and with a wide range of credits, from Traffic Cops to Two Greedy Italians, Sam is the right man to help us realise this vision.”

The factual indie, which was founded by Sam Branson in 2009, has rebranded as it focusses on bringing new audiences to important subjects and uses two-screen engagement around its docs.

Sundog is looking to capitalise on the success of its first Channel 4 commission Turtle Boy, which trended on Twitter in the UK while it was on air.

Anthony added: “Sundog Pictures will focus on producing content that lives off our TV screens as well as on them, exploring important issues in a way that it’s difficult to switch off from.”
