Discovery chief calls for contestable PSB pot

Broadcast conference: Discovery Networks UK managing director Dan Brooke has called for a pot of contestable funding to be set up, to ensure the future of the single documentary.

Speaking at the Broadcast Digital Channels Conference this morning, Brooke said the genre was under threat because of a “paralysis of choice”.

Many examples of valuable public service programming are being lost to viewers amid the overwhelming choice of content available, he explained.

He was also critical of Sky's EPG arrangement, in which 70% of all viewing takes place in the entertainment category, and suggested it should be overhauled.

Brooke recommended that a top 100 channels chart featuring multi-genre broadcasters should appear at the top of the EPG.

He also suggested that the barriers to entry for channels wanting to launch on Sky should be raised, and that a pot of contestable funding be introduced.

Brooke said that the fund should not necessarily come from top-slicing the licence fee but that it was critical that money should be made available from some source to support public service programming.
