BBC Broadcast dominated the international categories at last week's Promax Awards in New York and Broadcast Young Talent Award winner Richard Acton was recognised as an exciting new talent for the second time in as many months, writes Rick Dacey.

The BBC picked up an unprecedented 33 awards - 18 of which were gold - for its work in promos and media-based marketing, as well as winning a silver BDA for its on-air image for UKG2. BBC Broadcast's global business director, Nigel Cole, commented that it was a perfect springboard for its recent US expansion. 'The recognition of our work across the board by a jury of our peers is one of the best endorsements we could ever hope for,' he said.

Golds were taken for, among others, drama programme promotion (Holy Cross), comedy programme promotion (Dead Ringers - Ozzy), reality programme promotion (If) and branding/image (BBC4). Broadcasters ITV and Five picked up 12 and eight awards respectively, both of which were split fifty-fifty between gold and silver.

BBC Broadcast's Acton was awarded the Aerodrome Rocket award, which recognises a producer, marketer or designer with four or less years of experience in promotion and design who is creating outstanding work. Acton won best young on-air designer at the Broadcast Young Talent Awards in May.

Promax is a global, non-profit organisation that aims to advance the role and effectiveness of promotion, marketing and broadcast design professionals in the electronic media.

A panel of promotion and marketing professionals use three criteria to judge the nominations: overall creativity, production quality and results in achieving marketing objectives.

l Soho facility Oasis Television played a part in securing nine of the BBC's 33 awards, six of which were gold awards, with editor Stuart Eadle working on double-gold winning promo Dead Ringers - Ozzy.
