24 hours with Ella Toone

The BBC is putting up to £1.2m worth of YouTube-first sports content out to tender.

The content will form part of BBC Sports’ Sport+ service, which offers short-form digital content and mid- and long-form video, audio and written features across platforms.

In an invitation to tender, published today, the broadcaster is asking indies to pitch YouTube-first ideas focused around one or more of three pillars: Rivals, 24 Hours with… and Unfiltered.

Rivals will consist of films revealing how major rivalries have shaped certain sports, such as Messi v Ronaldo; aimed at under-35s, 24 Hours With… focuses on access-led stories about athletes and their lives, such as 24 hours with Ella Toone; while Unfiltered shares first-person, in-depth accounts of the realities behind sport, such as How Safe is Rugby?

The broadcaster will commission up to six hours of programming, including 30–60-minute films for YouTube and iPlayer, as well as shorts for both platforms and the BBC Sport website and app. Budgets will be between £180,000 and £200,000 per hour of content.

The BBC’s aim is to build the Sport+ strand on YouTube in the UK and globally, increasing digital engagement and achieving high completion rates on iPlayer. Content should also be aligned with major sporting events covered by the BBC.

The deadline for proposals is 2 October with the winner to be awarded in November.
