Sandpaper Films to produce 90-minute doc
BBC1 has ordered a documentary about the Rochdale grooming survivors.
The Betrayed will be produced by Baby P: The Untold Story indie Sandpaper Films, and is based on the real-life events behind the channel’s recent drama Three Girls.
The 90-minute doc features interviews with those involved in the cases, including some survivors who are speaking for the first time.
Subjects also include Rochdale Crisis Intervention Team manager Sara Rowbotham, former detective constable Maggie Oliver and chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal.
The doc claims that a number of groups, including the police, social services, politicians and the Muslim community, played a part in letting the abuse continue unchecked across cities and towns in the north and beyond.
It comes after three-parter Three Girls, which detailed the grooming, rape and sex trafficking of teenage girls in the city, drew a consolidated audience of 8.1m (31%) over three consecutive nights in May.
The Betrayed was commissioned by BBC1 director of content Charlotte Moore and commissioning head for documentaries Clare Sillery.
The film is directed by Henry Singer, while Rob Miller is producing and Simon Ford is exec producing.
