British filmmakers that use techniques such as CGI and special effects to enhance their wildlife programmes are prominent in the shortlist for this year's Wildscreen Natural History awards.

The biennial wildlife film festival celebrates the best of animal and nature shows from around the world and this year graphics-heavy programmes such as The Nile,Sea Monsters and Dune all receive nominations.

Awards organisers said that the trend reflects "a noticeable change in commissioning and viewing trends within a diversifying market place."

The BBC Natural History Unit picked up 14 nominations as either commissioner or producer while BBC Specialist Factual received two nods for its Elephants: Spy in the Herd show.

Other UK producers nominated in the 18 categories include: Aardman, Tigress Productions, OSF productions, DOX productions, Granada Bristol and Icon Films.

In total the Wildscreen 2004 awards received 405 entries. Winners will be announced during the Festival Week (10-15 October) this year.
