Science doc will explore climate phenomenon known as rain bombs

European broadcaster Arte, the UK’s Channel 4, Australia’s SBS and Nova in the US have linked up on a science doc exploring climate crisis.
Rain Bombs (1 x 60 minutes or 1 x 90 minutes) investigates deadly downbursts, a little-known but devastating weather phenomenon directly linked to climate change.
The documentary also explores the latest scientific advances aimed at predicting and mitigating the impact of these dangerous and life-threatening storms.
The show hails from Blink Films, with PBS Distribution securing the international co-production funding.
“We are excited to be exploring the science behind this rising but little-known phenomenon,” said Helene Ganichaud, head of specialist factual and natural history at Arte.

Dan Chambers, creative director of Blink Films, added: “It’s rare to find such an extraordinary phenomenon that hasn’t already been explored in depth by television.
“The more we’ve looked into the science of how they occur and the damage they can do, the more intriguing they become. And because of global warming, they’re getting more extreme.”
Eniela Bella, director of co-production finance sales at PBS Distribution, added: “We’re proud to bring this important story to audiences worldwide and collaborate with partners who understand the urgency and global relevance of a story like Rain Bombs.”
Alongside Rain Bombs, PBS Distribution has also secured investment for fellow science project, Eclipse Across Europe, which is tied to the 2026 total solar eclipse.
