Young adult drama to be based on 2006 film
Disney+ is adapting 2006 feature Aquamarine with the original film’s star Emma Roberts set for a guest role in the series.
The US-based streamer and Disney Channel have greenlit a pilot for the show, which is being written by Sarah Watson (The Bold Type).

Elizabeth Alen Rosenbaum (Pretty Little Liars), the film’s director, will direct and exec produce alongside Susan Cartsonis, who also worked on the film.
Roberts, reprising her role of Claire Brown, is also EP.
The story will track a girl’s move to a seaside town where she finds out that her disappeared mother was in fact a mermaid.
The 2006 film, which followed two girls helping a mermaid to find love, was a commercial flop but has since become a cult classic.
It was based on Alice Hoffman’s 2001 novel of the same name, with John Quaintance and Jessica Bendinger writing. The trio are not attached to the series pilot.
Disney has been returning to pilots over the past year, with orders for shows such as Coven Academy, Eerie Elementary and Witch Mountain.
