Chuck Lorre to oversee comedy focusing on comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom
HBO Max has ordered a Big Bang Theory spinoff set after the original series.
Warner Bros Discovery’s flagship streamer is lining up Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, from Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television, focusing on original series character Stuart Bloom.
The series, which represents the fourth in The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) universe, will see comic book store owner Bloom attempt to restore reality after he breaks a device built by TBBT protagonists Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter.
In doing so, Bloom accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Aided in his quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke, Bloom will encounter alternate-universe versions of iconic characters from the original series.
TBBT creator Lorre will exec producer alongside Zak Penn, and Bill Prady.
The cast will see the return of TBBT regulars Kevin Sussman (Stuart), Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Bert), and John Ross Bowie (Barry).
HBO Max chair and chief exec of HBO and HBO Max content Casey Bloys said: “Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn’t be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team.”
Lorre added: “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ would have loved, hated, and argued about.”
Prady said: “The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I’m certain that joy will come through the screen.
“Putting characters we loved from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.
Previous spinoffs Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage have both landed to positive responses from viewers with the former clocking up over 61m views across its seven series on Netflix in the second half of 2024 alone.
Chairman and chief exec of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, Channing Dungey, said: “this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist.”
