HBO and Rai’s adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel series My Brilliant Friend is to be remade for the first time.

OGM Pictures in Turkey will start production on its own version of the TV series later this year, following a deal with the original show’s producers, which include Fremantle-backed Wildside and The Apartment, as well as fellow Italian firm Fandango.

The show marks the first scripted format adaptation of the drama, which ran across four seasons from 2018 to 2024.

The story is based on the quadrilogy by Ferrante and tracks the life of character Elena Greco across more than 50 years. When the most important friend in her life seems to disappear without trace, Greco - now an elderly woman living in a house crammed with books - switches on her PC and starts writing her own story and that of Lila.

Amac Us, senior vice president of distribution for Fremantle in Middle East, Africa and South Eastern Europe, said: “OGM Pictures have a proven track record of producing hits that resonate locally, and we are thrilled to partner with them to bring Elena Ferrante’s exquisite story to new audiences.

“My Brilliant Friend is celebrated for its gripping storytelling, emotional depth, and iconic characters. It’s a universal and deeply human drama that transcends borders, and we’re confident this new adaptation will capture the hearts of viewers in Türkiye.”

Onur Güvenatam, founder of OGM Pictures, said: ”This universally celebrated masterpiece is more than just a story -  it’s a profound exploration of human connection, friendship, and identity. We at OGM Pictures are committed to bringing this powerful narrative to life with the greatest of care, preserving the authenticity and soul of Ferrante’s work while creating an experience that resonates with audiences worldwide.”

HBO and Italian pubcaster Rai launched the final instalment of the Neapolitan drama in November 2024. Fremantle has sold the show into more than 170 territories, with the series launching in Turkey via Digiturk, Tabii, Turkcell TV+ and Puhu TV.
