Fine Point Films readies RTÉ two-parter about rise and fall of hurling icon DJ Carey

Kneecap producer Fine Point Films is behind an upcoming RTÉ documentary about Irish sporting legend and recently jailed confidence trickster DJ Carey.
DJ Carey: The Dodger is a 2 x 60-minute film that tracks the rise and fall of hurling icon Carey, who was noted for his speed, skill and grace on the field which helped Kilkenny secure five All-Ireland championship wins and led him to be widely considered the greatest hurler in living memory.
However, following his retirement in 2013, Carey found himself back in the headlines for claims he defrauded people of hundreds of thousands of euros by falsely claiming to have cancer. Earlier this month Carey was convicted to five and-a-half years in prison for multiple counts of deception.
The doc features exclusive footage of Carey and interviews with his victims, sports journalists, and those who know him best to unpack a fall grace that rocked victims and hurling fans alike.
DJ Carey: The Dodger was commissioned for RTÉ1 by Gráinne McAleer, commissioning editor for documentaries and features, and is exec produced and directed by Trevor Birney for Fine Point.

The indie is also a co-producer on recent feature films Saipan and Kneecap, and made documentaries Mercury 13 (Netflix), Taking Back Control, Quinn Country (both for RTÉ) and feature doc No Stone Unturned, among others.
McAleer said: “This film looks at the remarkable career of a sporting legend but also really explores how fame can distort reality and the devastating consequences for all those involved. We are very grateful to those who took part and shared their stories on camera for the first time.”
Birney added: “DJ Carey’s rise and fall is one of the most extraordinary stories we’ve ever told. It’s a story of trust and betrayal; a story of a man who was idolised not just in his home county but throughout the island which he used without sympathy to prey on his victims.
“This series was made possible by the courage of those who came forward and the reality is we know there are many more victims out there who suffered as a result of the actions of DJ Carey.”
DJ Carey: The Dodger TXs on RTE1 at 9.35pm on Monday 24 November
