Departure means all three of Spanish group’s founders have now left the company

Tatxo Benet, chairman and chief exec at Spanish giant Mediapro Group, is stepping down after more than two decades with the company.

Benet’s exit comes after an agreement with Hong Kong-based majority shareholder Southwind and 25 years after the exec founded Mediapro with Jaume Roures and Gerard Romy.

Benet’s exit means none of the founders are now at the company - Roures left his management role two years ago while Romy departed in 2016.

Mediapro is set to name former Movistar+ exec Sergio Oslé as its chairman, according to multiple Spanish reports.

Prisa Media’s Carlos Núñez has already been appointed chief exec at the company, which employs nearly 7,000 staff across 50 offices in 28 countries. He starts in March next year.

Mediapro revenues stood at €1.07bn last year with EBITDA of €182m, and produces rafts of sports content, as well as shows for streamers and networks.

Its Mediapro Studios arm has been looking to expand globally and is behind series such as The Head and Los Pelotaris, but the wider group has been hit by losing rights to produce coverage of Spain’s La Liga and cancelling its deal to broadcast Ligue 1 in France.

On his exit, Benet said: “I’m confident that this new chapter - one in which none of the three original founders remain - will be just as successful as the past three decades, which have seen Grupo Mediapro, a company born and raised in Catalonia, become a global benchmark.”
