European production group Mediawan has struck a deal with electric car manufacturer BYD to fund and develop programming together.

The partnership will see the Drama Republic and See Saw Films owner working with Chinese giant BYD to integrate the latter’s brand into Mediawan Group productions.

Vehicles will be featured in “upcoming flagship projects”, Mediawan said, including on the upcoming film based on the Miraculous animation franchise.

Original programming “inspired by the BYD brand” will also be created, with one initial project featuring Miraculous character Ladybug introducing a special episode of the comedy spin-off Miraculous Chibi series on YouTube.

The companies are also launching an award for emerging creative and young talent around the Cannes Film Festival, with an annual €40,000 (£35,000) grant available as part of the award.

Pierre-Antoine Capton, chairman and co-founder of Mediawan Group, said the strategy of involving brands as partners in productions “is becoming essential as it allows us to innovate at scale and invest in ambitious projects both locally and internationally.”

Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD, added that the pact marked “a new chapter” for her company as it looks to expand.
