Former Lat Am chief Gus O’Brien to take on remit from long-standing Ken Bettsteller
NBCUniversal has named Gus O’Brien as president of its international networks and direct-to-consumer divisions, with Ken Bettsteller stepping down after two decades with the company.

O’Brien takes up the role on 1 April, having been managing director of NBCU’s Latin American networks and direct-to-consumer since 2020.
During that time he led the roll-out of regional streamer Universal+ and before that was senior vice president of networks in Lat Am. He relocated to Miami in 2014 from London, where he was part of NBCU’s international business development team.
He will oversee NBCU brands outside of the US ranging from Syfy and 13th Street to E! Entertainment TV, as well as streamers such as Universal+ and Hayu.
O’Brien takes up the role from Bettsteller, who is moving into an advisory role focusing on key international NBCU Media Group ventures, the Comcast-owned outfit said.
The rejig will also see Hendrik McDermott expanding his remit by becoming managing director of international DTC and EMEA, Canada.
McDermott has most recently been overseeing networks and streaming in Europe, Middle East and Africa, a remit he took on in 2023 after the exit of Lee Raftery.
Matt Strauss, chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group, described O’Brien as ”a worthy successor” to Bettsteller, adding he would bring “his innovative leadership to the broader group, working with the international management team to further strengthen and support these brands.”
