Death Inc

Netflix is expanding its Spanish-language output by striking a rare deal for a comedy that debuted on Movistar Plus+ and picking up regional rights to Caracol’s biographical series about singer Raphael.

The unusual deal with Movistar Plus+ will see Netflix taking global rights to the first two seasons of Death Inc (aka Muertos SL), which will be rolled out on 31 July.

The streamer will then exclusively release the third season on 21 August around the world, with the first two seasons continuing to be available on Movistar Plus+ in Spain and on Netflix globally.

Death Inc. is a comedy centered around a family-run funeral home and the relationships between the eccentric characters who inhabit it.

It is produced by Contubernio Films, the Madrid-based outfit that is also behind fellow Netflix show Machos Alfa (Alpha Males).

In related news, Netflix has taken Spanish and LatAm rights to Aquel, a biographical series based on the life of renowned Spanish singer Miguel Rafael Martos Sánchez (aka Raphael).

The eight-part series will star Javier Morgade (Locomía, Alma) and Carlos Santos (1992, Smoke & Mirrors) as Raphael, tracking his life in post-war Spain to becoming a globally recognised artist.

The series started filming in June and is being produced by Banijay’s DLO Producciones (El Jardinero, Not One More) in association with Colombia’s Caracol Televisión.

It is directed by Tito López Amado, Javier Pulido, and Beatriz Sanchís, with José Manuel Lorenzo as producer and Jacobo Martos as associate producer.

The script was written by Ignacio del Moral, Paloma Rando, and Adrià P. Xancó. Executive producers include Nacho Bolonio, Dago García, Lisette Osorio, and José Manuel Lorenzo.

Raphael was attached on the series and described the show “not as a biopic that idealises my path, but as an honest, unvarnished portrait that doesn’t shy away from any part, no matter how difficult.”
