Kiwi series has been picked up in Australia

Comedy stars Rose Matafeo, Joe Thomas, Paul Williams and Bret McKenzie have written and will star in a comedy series for New Zealand’s TVNZ.
New Zealand Spy, which has begun filming in Auckland, is produced by Taskmaster NZ indie Kevin & Co and has already been acquired by Australia’s the ABC.
The retro-inspired series is set around the 1960s or 1970s and will follow members of the New Zealand Intelligence Agency who are thrust into the world of espionage as they attempt to stop an attack from New Zealand’s nemesis, Australia.
The series will also feature international comedians including Tim Key (The Ballad of Wallis Island), Sam Campbell (LOL: Last One Laughing UK), Andy Lee (Hamish & Andy), Claudia O’Doherty (Love) and Tony Armstrong.
The exec producers are Cam Bakker and Bronwyn Bakker for Kevin & Co, Greg Sitch and Paul Williams. The director is Tim van Dammen.
The series is backed by BBC Studios, which will handle rest of world sales, and made with the support of NZ On Air and the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate.
Kevin & Co has recently scooped major wins at the 2025 New Zealand Screen Awards, including Best Entertainment for Taskmaster NZ Season five and Best Comedy for Vince.
