The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina

Twofour is following up on the success of its Apple TV travelogue The Reluctant Traveler with a culinary show for the streamer, this time fronted by comedian and actor Awkwafina (aka Nora Lum).

The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina is an eight-part series following the Crazy Rich Asians star as she learns to cook.

Her family previously ran Lum’s, a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York, which was the first such restaurant in the city’s now thriving Chinatown. Despite this background, the actor has few culinary skills.

The series tracks Lum on a personal cross-country journey as she explores contemporary Asian American cuisine. Assisted by chefs, restaurateurs and her family, the star finds out what it takes to master cooking Asian food and if she can ultimately reimagine Lum’s legacy for today.

The show is produced by ITV Studios-backed Twofour and executive produced by Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss and Caroline Davies.

Lum said: “I’ve never been trusted around a kitchen, so I thank everyone involved for opening that part of my house up to me… Food has been a huge part of my family’s history, and to be able to explore and reconnect with that legacy has been an incredibly rare and very special opportunity.”

Twofour’s The Reluctant Traveler launched its third series on Apple TV in September, following its first run in 2023. The show follows actor Eugene Levy as he travels to locations around the world to explore local cultures.
