Netflix has announced that it will produce a behind-the-scenes docuseries following Spanish football league LaLiga.

Currently in pre-production, the show will follow the top division’s 2023/24 season, and release on the platform worldwide in 2024. It will look at everything that happens “behind the scenes and the more personal stories” of the league, and is Netflix’s first sport docuseries to be produced in Spain.

Netflix has greatly expanded its sports programming following the success of F1: Drive To Survive, with a particular focus on behind-the-scenes docuseries. This year it has released tennis series Break Point and a golf equivalent, Full Swing, and it has further plans for series on the Tour de France, Six Nations, Qatar 2022 World Cup, and more

Earlier this year, Broadcast Sport spoke to executive producer James Gay-Rees, of Box To Box Productions - which is producing many of these series, about what is in store for sports fans with these shows.

Óscar Mayo, executive director of LaLiga, said: “For LaLiga, to be the star of Netflix’s first sports series in Spain is a unique opportunity to take our football beyond the fans, to share with the world the excitement of the sport we love, and the chance for all our fans to see LaLiga from a totally different angle.”

Álvaro Díaz, director, unscripted & documentary series (Spain) for Netflix, added: “At Netflix, we have always been committed to bringing must watch series and films to our members around the world. We are very proud and excited to share this project with LaLiga, which is an unprecedented opportunity to experience the excitement of one of the most exciting sporting competitions on the planet, first-hand.”
