Bundesliga AWS shot speed

Sky Sports, Prime Video, the BBC, and two YouTube channels will show live Bundesliga matches in the UK and Ireland this season.

Sky Sports had previously held exclusive rights to the top tier of German football, but will now only show the primetime 5:30pm Saturday evening fixtures. This includes the highly anticipated clashes between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will played at this time later in the season. It will also have a highlights programme and other shoulder content through the week.

Meanwhile, Prime Video will air at least two Sunday fixtures each week, as well as a selection of others through the season. These will be available for £2.49 per match, without the need for a Prime subscription. This is similar to how it offers Ligue 1 and some international football on its platform.

Finally, the BBC, through its website and iPlayer, and YouTube channels The Overlap and That’s Football will show Friday night games, starting with the opening fixture between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig on 22 August. This is the first time that a major European league has partnered with a YouTube channel in this way, and sees Friday night matches available free-to-air through the three platforms.

Both YouTube channels have over one million subscribers, with The Overlap originally launched by former player and now pundit Gary Neville and That’s Football created by YouTuber Mark Goldbridge.

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, said: “To be able to include Bundesliga matches within our live football offering is phenomenal, especially Bayern Munich’s opening game with England’s captain Harry Kane. I’m proud BBC Sport has such an impressive portfolio of football coverage across all of our platforms - from live games to highlights, digital clips to breaking news on the website, we’ve got fans covered this season.”

Tim Wood, head of rights and business affairs, Prime Video Sport, EMEA, said: “German football has an intense following in the UK, especially as more English talent such as Jobe Bellingham and Jarrell Quansah join the likes of Harry Kane in the Bundesliga. By expanding our Pay-Per-View selection with Bundesliga matches, we’re giving UK football fans more ways to engage with European football throughout the season without long-term commitments or subscriptions.”

Scott Melvin, CEO of The Overlap, said: “The Bundesliga features some of the best footballers in the world, including England’s own Harry Kane, and to be able to offer unfettered access to these matches is an incredibly exciting moment for The Overlap. We’ve become one of the leading platforms for digital sports content all without a ball being kicked, so it’s fitting that our first move into live sport is with one of the biggest leagues in the world.

“Huge thanks to Jonny Keogh and his team at YouTube, for helping to bring this partnership together.”
