Golf TV

Warner Bros. Discovery will close its Golf TV streaming service from 12 December.

In a memo to customers last week, the broadcaster said that the platform will close next month - with its content to move to discovery+ and other platforms in the group. Broadcast Sport understands subscribers in the majority of European markets will have the opportunity to move on to a discovery+ or Eurosport subscription, including a one-month subscription to discovery+ in a number of markets at no extra cost - with added sport and non-sport content.

The platform’s core content is the PGA Tour in the US, which agreed a 12-year, $2 billion (£1.71bn) deal with what was then known as Discovery, in 2018. Golf TV was launched with these rights, before the company created its main streaming service, discovery+, in 2020. The move to move Golf TV’s rights follows a trend of centralisation in the industry, including Eurosport recently being added to discovery+ and the PGA Tour’s OTT service moving into ESPN+ in the US.

Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO of global streaming and games, JB Perrette, was reported by the New York Times earlier this year as saying that its moves into “niche” streaming services had been a failure. Cars, food, and golf services were named, with high costs and a lack of subsequent subscribers cited as the reasons for this disappointment.

Warner Bros. Discovery runs other sports-related streaming services, GCN+, the Global Cycling Network, and GMBN, the Global Mountain Biking Network, that are both available in the UK.
