BT has played down reports that it is targeting the majority share of Premier League football rights when they come up for auction as its TV service hits 1m subscribers.
The auction process for the three Premier League seasons from 2015/16 is expected to start later this year. BT chief executive Gavin Patterson said the fledgling broadcaster now has “more choice” around its strategy.
He added that he is happy with the volume of football rights, including European matches, BT currently holds.
Patterson was speaking at BT’s latest set of results at which it revealed it has signed up 1m households to its YouView TV service, having added 46,000 subscribers in the last three months.
The company now claims to have 5m BT Sport subscribers, which includes people accessing the channel via satellite, YouView and on digital platforms.
“BT Sport has proved very popular and we are delighted the service is now in around five million homes. For BT Consumer it underpinned a record 9% growth in revenue in the fourth quarter and the lowest line losses in over five years,” added Patterson.
