The presentation operation for CBeebies is returning to BBC Television Centre for the fi rst time in three years as production of the channel gets a new tapeless workflow.

BBC Studios & Post Production (S&PP) is providing a fully equipped studio, a self-contained Avid editing facility and engineering support for the channel, which moved its presentation work to Teddington Studios in 2007 as part of “a drive to cut costs per hour in BBC children’s”.

BBC R&D-developed Ingex technology will be deployed, allowing material to be ingested from the studio directly onto a server, where it can be accessed by the local edit suite.

S&PP resource manager Andrew Garnett, who is overseeing the installation, said: “Having successfully used Ingex on EastEnders, we felt this was an excellent solution for CBeebies and will match the BBC’s Digital Media Initiative workfl ow plans. With a large volume of material being produced daily, this is more cost-effective than conventional methods.”

The contract with S&PP runs until September 2011, when BBC Children’s will move to MediaCityUK in Salford.

Ingex software provides SDI video and audio capture, real-time transcoding and wrapping in MXF, archiving to LTO-3 data tape and network file serving.
