Channel 4 has named Shiny Button co-founder Andy Brereton as senior commissioning editor for comedy.

Brereton steps into the role vacated by Jack Bayles, who left to join as head of comedy at I May Destroy You indie Various Artists Limited (VAL) last month. He will report to the channel’s newly-appointed head of comedy Charlie Perkins and joins commissioning editor Laura Riseam and commissioning executive Joe Hullait.

Brereton established Banijay label Shiny Button in 2017 with Tom Davis and James De Frond, taking on the role of co-managing director.

Its credits include Channel 4’s The Curse, which aired earlier this year, BBC1’s King Gary, Gold’s Murder They Hope and upcoming Amazon comedy film Your Christmas or Mine. Prior to joining, Brereton was head of development at Tiger Aspect, creating Murder in Successville, Crackanory, Murder on the Blackpool Express and Drunk History.

“Andy’s a triple threat,” said Perkins. “He brings with him an incredible track record for conceiving, marshalling and delivering inventive shows which push the boundaries of scripted comedy.”

Brereton added: “I have loved every minute at Shiny Button with Tom and James, forging a great place to work for creative people. Growing ideas, talent and vision. I plan to use these skills to support our amazing indie community in producing their best ideas and help shape Charlie’s new vision for Channel 4 comedy.”

He will take up his post later this year.
