Graphics and effects facility Motion FX has bought a Quantel IQ digital film system to partner the Thomson Viper Filmstream camera it purchased last year in order to kickstart a move into HD production, writes Sam Espensen.

Motion managing director John O'Quigley, who spent around£500,000 on the system, told Broadcastthat after a year of research, the IQ was the only one "that could do everything we wanted."

Especially important was the IQ's Raid protection, which keeps data protected when recorded. O'Quigley commented: "The whole system is unique. We put the order in for the Viper last year but it's taken so long because of the money involved and the need to make sure everything's right." The camera will have a set of HD Digi-Prime lenses.

O'Quigley said that with the BBC buying Quantel kit it made sense for Motion FX to do so too. He hopes to attract high-end commercials and features work as well as using the system for HD editing.
