Recent lab tests have shown that NTL's network is capable of handling up to 18mbps - over four times the bandwidth currently available with the best broadband suppliers.
The increased bandwidth would be enough to relay high-definition sound and pictures to home users alongside other internet services. Around 95% of homes covered by NTL are believed to have fibre connectivity within one kilometre.
Recent research has claimed that internet provider television (IPTV) is set to grow from 1.9 million users in 2004 to 25.3 million worldwide by 2008, bringing in 10 times more revenue.
California's Multimedia Research also predicts that revenues will grow to $7.2bn by 2008, focused on the US, Europe and Asia markets. The European IPTV subscriber base grew by 500,000 users last year.
