German shopping network Pearl.tv is set to be Europe’s first UHD free-to-air channel, with a launch scheduled to coincide with the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin in September.

The channel will be made available via satellite and the internet through SES Platform Services.

SES will provide HEVC encoding of the live UHD signal and the uplink to its Astra satellites and will also manage the internet stream and content delivery network.

SES Platform Services has been involved in numerous UHD trials and demos, including the first live broadcast of a football game using HEVC compression, broadcast in partnership with Sky Deutschland.
