Cinesite has launched TechX, an internal “technology exploration unit” that’s dedicated to researching and developing innovative applications of Generative AI for the content creation industry.

TechX will explore the GenAI landscape to identify, develop, test, and validate creative solutions in collaboration with studios, filmmakers, and solution providers.

Michele Sciolette, CTO of the Cinesite Group, said: “While we fully recognise the many open questions and challenges associated with Generative AI technologies, Cinesite will proactively explore how these technologies can be harnessed to serve artists, developers and producers working in the VFX, animation and immersive industries.

“With decades of experience creating outstanding visuals of the highest standard, our team is ideally positioned for this exploration, ready to collaborate closely with our existing network of clients, solution providers and other interested parties. In combination with many other key R&D initiatives across our group, TechX represents a critical element in our AI strategy, ensuring our incredible artists have the best possible tools to continue delivering the exceptional work we are known for.”

Group CEO Antony Hunt, adds: “Groundbreaking technology that supports creativity is at the heart of our industry. It empowers us to deliver the world’s biggest films, TV shows & immersive content and pushes us - as individuals. TechX will allow us all to get ahead of the noise and find real and practical applications of this emerging technology. This will help establish ethical frameworks and principles to ensure the safe use of AI for our clients and within our organisation, enabling our talent to explore what might be possible. I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”

The TechX team will be led by:

●      Andrew McNamara (Generative AI Lead) An award winning and versatile CG & VFX Supervisor with over 30 years experience in the field of CGI and VFX across film, commercials, broadcast, motion design and immersive

●      Alexey Kuchinski (Generative AI 2D Supervisor) With more than 45 cinematic credits to his name, Kuchinski’s work with Trixter spans more than a decade. Most recently, Alexey was head of compositing for The Family Plan (2023), for which he led a cutting-edge RnD task force within Trixter to create a machine-learning face replacement technology for a crying baby.

●  Johan Valfridsson (Generative AI Technology Supervisor) As a senior software developer, Johan has supported Cinesite’s operations across many areas since joining Cinesite in 2010, including review systems, game engine technologies and much more.

Andrew McNamara said: “Generative AI potentially marks a paradigm shift in filmmaking, storytelling, and the entire content creation ecosystem. This disruptive technology, while presenting significant challenges, offers immense potential for amplifying and enhancing human creativity – not replacing it. With artists at the forefront, these transformative new tools have the potential to accelerate the creative process, opening doors to a future where the only limit is our imagination. Something we are keen to explore here at Cinesite with TechX.”

TechX will operate independently from Cinesite active shows, and its infrastructure will be segregated from Cinesite’s production environment.

The TechX team will report to the Group CTO, Michele Sciolette, and its activities will be overseen by the newly formed AI Advisory Council.

This Council, which includes creatives and technologists from across the Cinesite group, will provide guidance and support to TechX and advise on the group’s broader AI Strategy, with a particular focus on ensuring the development and application of safe, ethical and respectful AI solutions.
