Arts Alliance Media has succeeded in transferring an entire digital movie to a cinema using Arqiva's Content Delivery Network.

A 216GB file containing the full digital cinema package of the 2008 Palme D'Or winning ‘Entre Les Murs' was transmitted via the Intelsat 905 satellite, and loaded directly into the cinema's library server, without any operator intervention.

Satellite transmission of digital films to cinemas eliminates the cost and need to physically ship content on hard drives and manually upload them onto cinema servers.

The cinema involved was the CGR (Circuit George Raymond) at Villenave d'Ornon, on the outskirts of Bordeaux.

Rich Phillips, head of technical operations at Arts Alliance Media, was thrilled with the outcome. “This important first for Arts Alliance Media has successfully established the capabilities of our Content Delivery Platform. Working closely with Arqiva and using their proven satellite expertise we have developed a viable satellite delivery platform for digital cinema content which offers tremendous potential for distributors and exhibitors.”

Arqiva Satellite & Media's commercial director Barrie Woolston said: “Our satellite based Content Delivery Network brings significant time and cost savings. Arqiva's extensive international satellite infrastructure and Arts Alliance Media's digital cinema expertise forms a strong partnership for the distribution of content, including live events, into European cinemas.”
