Sony today unveiled the latest addition to its NXCAM lineup, a Super 35mm camcorder.

The camcorder is still under development, but Sony is working towards launching the device at the Broadcast and Video Expo in January, with units expected to ship by “early summer”.

Bill Drummond, strategic marketing manager at Sony Professional Europe, told Broadcast that the camera would be aimed at entry level users. “Basically, anyone on a restricted budget that wants a 35mm look,” he said.

NXCAM is a family of professional products that use consumer memory cards with AVCHD technology. Sony said it plans to implement 1080p (50p/25p) recording modes.

The camera is expected to cost in the region of €6,000 (£5,094).
