‘An incredible technical feat that represents the future of production and a better future for our planet’

Extreme E Studios, Aurora Media Worldwide/North One

Sporting events are often used to introduce ground-breaking production techniques, a feat achieved by Aurora Media Worldwide’s coverage of new off-road racing series Extreme E.

The production company employed a string of innovative and cutting-edge techniques to follow the emerging sport, in which electric SUVs race in locations damaged by climate change or human interference to raise awareness around the issues, while minimising any environmental impact.

Teams are led by F1 world champions Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Jenson Button, while races have so far taken place in Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Greenland, with the latter representing the first live international sports OB from the Arctic Circle.

The crew on site number around 40, far fewer than normal for a race of this kind, and represent a truly international production.

While all feeds are sent to a hub in London, graphics are handled by Al Kamel Systems in Barcelona, and augmented reality and virtual graphics are generated by NEP in Hilversum.

One judge said Aurora had achieved “an incredible technical feat that represents the future of production and a better future for our planet”.

Another said its use of innovative technology “elevates the production”.
