MTV Broadcast Services is spending more than #1m overhauling its studio facilities in Camden, writes Sam Espensen. The majority of the money will go on refurbishing 70 lighting hoists across its two main studios.
Gearboxes will also be replaced and the overhaul is expected to extend the working life of the current lighting rig.VT areas will be upgraded with new, expanded signal routing and monitoring systems, new furniture, lighting and decor. The sound desk in Studio C will be replaced with a so far undecided high performance audio console with improved routing and patching, as well as new monitoring communications, record, edit and replay facilities.Further work will be carried out in March with a major upgrade to the master control room which at present handles more than 40 channels for MTV and clients such as Paramount Comedy and Gulf Showtime. The atrium of its Camden building is also to get an extensive facelift early this year.MTVBS vice-president Peter Wright, discussing the refit, said: 'The new router will enable us to switch seamlessly between two studios, and the new sound desk will provide infinitely higher quality sound.'
