The FA and esports company ESL are teaming up to create England’s first esports team, the eLions.

Online qualifiers for the team will take place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March. Four finalists will then progress to the live finals in central London on Thursday 14 March.

The first official event for the newly assembled team, representing the Three Lions, will be next month’s invite-only FIFA eNations Cup exhibition event.

The tournament pits 16 national teams of the best eFootball nations against each other and is one of eight majors in the EA Sports FIFA 19 Global Series leading up to the FIFA eWorld Cup in August 2019.

The FA’s chief commercial and development officer Mark Bullingham said: “This presents an exciting opportunity for Three Lions fans to help form a new chapter in England’s history. FIFA 19 is played by hundreds of millions of players daily, so we have a great chance to engage with these as part of our efforts to continue to grow the game in England.”

FIFA’s chief digital transformation and innovation officer, Luis Vicente, added: “The involvement of our member associations with a dedicated nations tournament is another significant step forward for FIFA and the development of eFootball globally.”
