TSL Products has offloaded its SoundField surround sound audio product line to The Freedman Electronics Group, which includes the Røde microphones range.

TSL Products’ managing director Chris Exelby told Broadcast the move was necessary despite sales of the microphones increasing over the past 18 months due to their popularity with those shooting 360-degree and virtual reality content.

“While the sales were fantastic, we could see that this niche area of ambient sound capture could rapidly become mainstream and that other manufacturers would have the ability to manufacture these complex microphones in volume at a lower price than us.

“We would have to make a significant investment in making the products more cost-effective, but as a small business, we have other areas to focus our investment on.”

As part of the deal, TSL Products product director Pieter Schillebeeckx will join Freedman.

TSL Products will retain the SoundField upmix/ downmix processing range, which will be rebranded.
