“The endless tropes and weak plot aren’t enough to hold the attention”
The Rumour, 5
“Debbie is the sort of woman who appoints herself head of the committee that decides whether other mums are worthy of admission to the elite clique — and, more important still, whether their children will be accepted. Emily Atack plays her to perfection: rude, smug, false and, underneath the facade, deeply unhappy. I’d love to see a revival of BBC2’s Motherland with Debbie holding court.”
Christopher Stevens, Daily Mail
“People in nice coats with neat hair look pensive and hold huge glasses of wine, but the endless tropes and weak plot aren’t enough to hold the attention when every other channel is showing competing examples of the same show tackled with far more sophistication. For a plot about a child murder and the potential harm of unchecked gossip, it’s a surprisingly uninteresting saga that lacks emotional depth and any real human dirt under its fingernails.”

The Donald Trump Show, Channel 4
“The British wags behind The Donald Trump Show on Channel 4, who have fashioned a satirical film spoof from snippets of footage of his second term, provide some pretty stark and revealing moments. The first film focused on his doomed bromance with Elon Musk, and it worked best when it let the man himself do his thing: when it showed and didn’t feel the need to tell.”
Ben Dowell, The Times
“The idea of using inspired editing to re-present his second term as a lurid TV drama, with Trump at the centre as the classic scheming antihero, is compelling, and deserving of a better treatment than this wishy-washy effort. Why not go the whole hog and let the editing whizzes flex their muscles? Make it look like The Wolf of Wall Street or a Wes Anderson film, or turn it into a studio sitcom complete with a laugh track. Instead, we get the news we’ve all been watching, lightly seasoned with some whimsy, but completely lacking in any purpose.”
